What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is naturally occurring in hemp plants. Hemp, also known as Cannabis Sativa, is marijuana without the part that gets you high – THC.

THC and CBD are both cannibinoids, two of several found in cannabis, others include CBG, CBDa, THCa, CBC and CBN. Scientists are still investigating the properties of cannabis, but THC and more recently CBD are the two cannibinoids that we know the most about. THC is pyschoactive, i.e. – it’s the stuff that gets you high. While CBD is currently only licensed in the UK as a food supplement, rather than as a medicine, studies point toward its capability to bring about a state of homeostasis, or balance, in the body.

CBD is available to use in several forms – if you have spent any length of time browsing the web or talking to people about it, you may well be feeling overwhelmed. CBD can be extracted from the plant and used as an isolate – this is just the CBD component of hemp and nothing else. Full spectrum extract, as used in our products, means that the full range of components of the plant have been extracted and the fibrous matter left behind. It is a highly concentrated plant extract containing the full range of cannibinoids and also terpenes.

Terpenes are the part of the plant that give it a unique taste and smell. Lots of plants contain terpenes, for example lavender contains the terpene linalool and citrus fruits contain the terpene limonene. Different terpenes have different effects on the body, and can alter the way in which your body responds to the cannibinoids contained in cannabis. For example, limonene is considered to be uplifiting, which is why citrus essential oils are often used in aromatherapy blends to boost the mood. Linalool is regarded as having a relaxing effect – you may be interested to know that as well as being found in lavender and cinnamon, it is also contained in cacao – no wonder dark chocolate is so therapeutic!

Here at Northern Delights we believe that plants are best used holistically, which is why all of our products are made with full spectrum hemp extract, which contains the full range of cannibinoids and terpenes found in the plant. Our edibles also contain the terpenes of the various herbs, spices and essential oils used in our chocolates and tea blends. We hope that you enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed creating them, and we would love to hear back from you if they have helped you in any way!
